Malcolm Bricklin, a graduate of Boone High School and a legendary automotive entrepreneur, says he has spent the last year spending time and money developing "something everybody said was a scam.''

His plan could revolutionize the auto industry, keep open at least two factories and offer a product that rejected Chrysler and General Motors dealers could sell, the former Orlando resident says.

In a nutshell, Bricklin is proposing that his company, Visionary Vehicles, buy up to 300,000 new vehicles a year from GM and Chrysler, upgrade the interiors "from standard to luxury,'' and install "hydrogen hybrid'' engine technology that he says could double fuel mileage.

"I know I have a product that I can put on cars that will make them get 100 percent better mileage,'' he said in a recent interview.

In a three-page proposal, his company would market these vehicles as Visionary Vehicles/Chrysler or Visionary Vehicles/GM.

Bricklin said he would cherry-pick from the manufacturers' existing dealer network to find the best dealers and they would sell and service the cars.

Those familiar with Bricklin, 70, should not be surprised at his grand vision. He was the first to import Subaru into the U.S. market, and the last to import Fiats, which are supposed to return as part of the Fiat partnership with Chrysler.

Bricklin manufactured his own sports car, the Bricklin SV-1 — SV stood for "Safety Vehicle" – and the car helped pioneer some safety features. But Bricklin is best known for importing the Yugo, the $3,995 car that he described as "equivalent to a used car, but with a new car warranty.''

At the heart of his idea, and the portion most likely to raise eyebrows within the automotive community, is the addition of a high-performance, on-board hydrogen "electrolyser" that would he says would split distilled water into hydrogen and oxygen, then injects those gases directly into the air intake of the engine.

That technology, plus the upgraded interiors, would be the primary difference between the Visionary Vehicle products and conventional Chrysler and GM vehicles. Bricklin stresses that his proposal is preliminary, and he admits there are multiple details to work out, including the funding for the project. Bricklin said he expects to have a working prototype within 90 days, and once he has proven the concept, he'll start looking for support.

"I really believe this is why I was put on this Earth,'' he said. "All those mistakes, and all those lessons, and all those experiences have led me to know exactly how to take advantage of this technology.''
